At the foot of Ghana's highest mountain is the town of Gbledi Gbogame. I was invited there by a local musician I had met at Emmason Internet Cafe in Hohoe. Boniface Sasa Homatekpor tells me the story about the journey he makes from Mount Afadjato to Hohoe to check his messages, browse the web and spread the word about his talented troupe of traditional musicians and dancers.

I guess I take a lot of things for granted.

An anecdote:

Workers downstairs from me re-finished the floors a couple days ago and the whole house stinks of toxic varnish. We were getting stoned just breathing the air indoors. So we've had to leave all the windows open for the last two nights.

That would be fine, except we live in Montreal, Canada and it's below freezing.
We've been complaining constantly.

But at least I can get up first thing in the morning, put on a coat and a balaclava, and check my email.

We only notice the internet here when it doesn't work for an hour.

I've been in the capitol the past two days hooked up to a decent Internet connection without fear of power cuts or network interruption. It's been great! I've managed to do a bunch of admin work that would normally take days to do in places like Hohoe.

The digital divide that exists between the urban centers and rural regions is seriously crippling. Places like Gbledi Gbogame are even further removed. Kinda takes the fun out of the Internet when you have to travel 40 miles to the closest dial-up connection.
